The Best Swimming Activities for Summer 2025

While we want to provide you with some of the best swimming activities to kick-start your summer, it’s important to understand that we’re using the word ‘swimming’ loosely here. While many of these activities will include pools, some are just about helping your little one gain all-important confidence around water. In no particular order, we have:

Outdoor Swimming Pools

The summer months are the perfect time to visit an outdoor swimming pool, take along pool toys, pack a picnic, and see if there is a park nearby. Jubilee Park at Woodhall Spa has a lovely heated pool open between April and September.

Swimming Lessons

Toddlers and younger children who have finished nursery or school for the summer may relish the opportunity to burn off some excess energy at a swim school. This gives them the opportunity to get well established in their classes before returning to education, where they may be more tired from busy days of learning. With warmer weather, getting changed pre and post-swim is always more appealing. (some swim schools only operate in term-time, so make sure you check this first)

Water Parks

Whether you opt for larger waterparks such as Alton Towers or a smaller but equally as exciting splash park like the one at Kings Park, Retford, your little one is sure to be in their element. Splash parks are a brilliant way of alleviating some of the fear many children have around getting water in their faces, helping them gain vital confidence in swimming underwater.

This One’s Not For The Kids

Summertime is often all about having fun with your kids, and so it should be, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take some time for yourself. Maybe you want your child to excel at swimming because it's something you love. Take part in an open-water swim such as the Arla Great North Swim in Windermere or The Wales Swim for a great challenge and the best atmosphere.

Pool Obstacle Courses

Whether you keep an eye out for local pools putting on summer activity days or create your own with the equipment you already have, a pool obstacle course is a great way to make time in the pool more exciting. Use pool noodles, floaties, and diving rings to create a course for your children to navigate. Make it more exciting by setting a timer and seeing who can complete the course the quickest.

Swim Safe

Swim Safe is designed for children aged 7-14 and takes place every summer, from May to September, at selected coastal and inland locations across the UK. It’s a community-focused programme that gives children an opportunity to learn how to be safe in and around open water. The practical sessions are designed to help young people who can already swim 25m unaided improve their swimming ability and feel more confident in the water.

Paddle Pool Fun

Swimming activities can be simple and cost-effective, especially for babies and toddlers. Find a shaded area in your garden and fill a paddling pool with warm but not hot water. Let your little ones splash about till their heart's content, and ensure they have plenty of toys and cups for pouring. Just remember to never leave a child unattended around water.
