Outdoor Swimming With Kids: What to Wear for Sun, Wind and Cooler Water
Estimated reading time: 9 minutes
Outdoor swimming is one of the things you look forward to most in the warmer months. But getting the right kit for your little one? That's the bit nobody warns you about. Between UV exposure, wind chill and water that's colder than it looks, there's a lot to think about. This guide gives you clear, practical advice on what to dress your child in for outdoor swimming: whether you're headed to a lido, the beach or an outdoor pool party.
What specific features matter most in outdoor swimwear for kids?
Indoor swimming is straightforward. The water's warm, there's no wind and UV isn't a concern. Outdoors is a different story. Here's what to look for before you buy.
UPF rating
Go for UPF 50+ fabric. It blocks over 98% of UVA and UVB rays, and it doesn't wash off or fade the way sun cream does after a dip. It's your child's first line of defence against the sun.
Material and thickness
Neoprene traps a thin layer of water against the skin, and the body warms it. Thicker neoprene (2mm) gives more insulation for cooler water. Thinner neoprene (1mm) works well on warmer days when your child still needs a bit of warmth. Fleece-lined options suit babies who really feel the cold.
Coverage
How much skin is exposed? Long sleeves and legs give more protection from both sun and wind. Shorter designs allow greater freedom of movement but leave more skin open to UV.
Wind and sand resistance
Neoprene is naturally windproof and sandproof. That matters more than you'd think at the beach, where wind chill can make children cold the moment they step out of the water.
Ease of changing
Let's be honest: outdoor changing facilities are rarely glamorous. Front zips, flat-opening designs and stretchy fabrics make life easier when you're changing a wriggly toddler in a beach car park.
Fit
Snug is key. Too loose and water flushes through the suit, reducing insulation. Too tight and it restricts movement. Always check the size guide using your child's actual measurements rather than going by age alone.
🎯 Remember to apply sun cream to any exposed skin, even when your child is wearing UPF clothing. And all swimming aids must be used under constant adult supervision.
How do outdoor swimming comparisons stack up: wetsuits, UV suits and rash tops?
Understanding the differences between product types stops you second-guessing yourself at checkout. Here's how they compare.
UV Sun & Sea Wetsuit
Pairs a 1mm neoprene body with polyester and elastane side panels and sleeves. The neoprene keeps your child warm. The stretchy panels let them move freely. It offers UPF 50+ protection across covered areas, and the breathable fabric on the arms and panels dries quickly, helping to regulate body temperature so your child doesn't overheat out of the water. A solid all-rounder for outdoor pools and beach holidays. Don't use it in heated pools above 32°C.
Kids Shorty Wetsuit
Uses 2mm neoprene, so it's warmer than the UV Sun & Sea Wetsuit. It's windproof, sandproof and rainproof too: perfect for UK beach days when conditions change without warning. Designed for children aged 2 to 6, it covers the torso, upper arms and upper legs. A front zip makes changing easy, even when the suit's wet. Sun cream should always go on exposed skin.
Rash tops
Lightweight, quick-drying UPF 50+ tops in long or short sleeve options. They're great for days when a wetsuit would be too much but sun protection is still a must. You can layer them under or over other swimwear for extra coverage.
Legionnaire hats
Cover the head, ears and back of the neck: the areas most parents forget when applying sun cream. Made from UPF 50+ fabric, they're lightweight and dry quickly. Available for ages 1 to 6.
Baby Wrap™
A 2mm neoprene wetsuit for ages 0 to 30 months. It opens completely flat, wraps around the body and fastens with adjustable hook-and-loop closures. Arms and legs stay free for kicking and splashing. It provides UPF 50+ protection and gives you a non-slip grip when holding your baby in the water. You'll need a Happy Nappy™ or Happy Nappy Duo™ underneath.
Happy Nappy™ Wetsuit
A 1mm neoprene wetsuit with built-in leak protection, so there's no need for a separate swim nappy for general swimming. It gives UPF 50+ sun protection, covers the core of the body and has 3/4-length sleeves, leaving legs free to kick. Sized 0 to 2 years.
Warm In One™
The warmest option in our baby range. It isn't neoprene: we've used TPU with a super-soft polyester fleece lining. Full-length sleeves and legs cover the whole body, and cuffs at the wrists and ankles help keep barrier creams in place. Sized 0 to 2 years. A Happy Nappy™ or Happy Nappy Duo™ must be worn underneath.
Which outdoor swimwear is best for each situation?
Every swim scenario comes with its own challenges. Here's how to match the right product to the right conditions.
Warm, sunny beach days. Pair a UV Sun & Sea Wetsuit with a Legionnaire Hat for strong sun protection with just enough warmth for dipping in and out of the sea. Pop a rash top underneath if the wind picks up. For babies, a Happy Nappy™ Wetsuit handles sun protection and leak protection in one piece.
Cooler UK beach holidays. British coastal waters are rarely warm, even in summer. A Kids Shorty Wetsuit with 2mm neoprene keeps children comfortable for longer and extends their time in the water. It's windproof and sandproof between dips too. For babies who feel the cold, the Warm In One™ with its fleece lining provides the most warmth you can get.
Outdoor pool sessions. The UV Sun & Sea Wetsuit works well here: light warmth, sun protection and breathable panels to stop your child overheating. Add a Legionnaire Hat for poolside play. For little ones, the Baby Wrap™ is quick to put on and take off, gives core warmth and has UPF 50+ protection.
Learning to swim outdoors. This can feel daunting for little ones, so the right kit really helps. The Sleeved Floatsuit holds children aged 1 to 6 in the correct swimming position with a 16-piece adjustable buoyancy system. You remove floats over time as your child's confidence grows. The sleeves and legs protect from sun, wind and sand. All swimming aids must be used under constant adult supervision.
Changeable weather. Layer up. A rash top over swimwear gives you flexibility to adjust as conditions shift. On blustery days, neoprene provides wind protection that lighter fabrics just can't match.
What are the alternatives if a wetsuit isn't what your child needs?
Not every child gets on with a wetsuit. Some find them too warm, some find them uncomfortable, and sometimes conditions simply don't call for one. That's fine. There are plenty of other options to keep them happy in the water.
Rash tops and swim shorts are a lighter option for warm days. They give UPF 50+ sun protection without the insulating effect of neoprene. They're also easier to get on and off, they dry quickly and they pack down smaller for holidays.
Thermaswim suits use a brushed fleece inner to trap and warm water against the skin, much like a wetsuit. But they're softer, stretchier and more comfortable for children who find neoprene restrictive. They can even double as a base layer under clothes on chilly days. Don't use them in hydropools or very warm pools, though: there's a risk of overheating.
The Happy Nappy™ Sunsuit combines a neoprene Happy Nappy™ bottom with a lightweight Nylon-Lycra rash top. The top half is cool and breathable, covering the areas most vulnerable to the sun with UPF 50+ protection. The bottom half provides full leak protection. It's a good option for warmer days when a full neoprene wetsuit would be too much. Sized 0 to 2 years.
And for children building water confidence? A Go Splash Swim Vest provides support without the bulk of a floatsuit. It's neoprene, it packs easily and it holds children in the right position for learning to swim.
All swimming aids must be used under constant adult supervision.
