Incontinence Swimwear for Kids: A Parent's Guide to Confidence in the Pool
Every child deserves to feel the magic of the water. The weightlessness. The freedom. The absolute joy of splashing about with no worries in the world.
If your child has incontinence, we know that pool day can feel more complicated than that. The worry about leaks, about hygiene, about how your child might feel: it's a lot to carry. And you're carrying it because you care.
But, with the right swimwear, none of that has to stand in the way. Your child can be in the water, having the time of their life, just like every other kid.
This guide is here to help you get there.

Why the Pool Is Worth It
For children who find some things harder than others, the pool is often a place where everything shifts. There are no desks, no expectations, no comparisons. Just water, movement and fun.
Swimming builds strength, coordination and confidence. It's wonderful for physical health and it does something special for wellbeing too. Children who might struggle in other environments often thrive in the pool.
That's worth protecting. And the right swimwear is how you protect it.
Swimming Lessons With Incontinence: What Parents Should Know
Pool Rules
Most swimming pools and leisure centres in the UK require children who aren't reliably toilet trained, or who experience incontinence, to wear a reusable swim nappy or specialist swimwear. This applies regardless of age.
It's simply about keeping the water safe for everyone. Standard swimwear doesn't offer the containment pools need, so most swim schools are clear about what they expect. If yours hasn't mentioned it, just ask before your child's first session. A quick call saves any last minute stress
Disposable vs Reusable
You've probably seen disposable swim nappies on the shelves. They're convenient on the surface, but for regular swimmers they're not the best choice. They cost more over time, they're harder on the environment and many don't offer the level of containment that pools actually require.
Reusable swim nappies are the better option all round. They're washable, they last and they're made to do the job properly. Most UK swim schools now insist on a reusable swim nappy as standard.
We launched our Ditch the Disposables campaign alongside swim schools and holiday parks across the UK for exactly this reason. We want to help families make the switch to reusable swimwear that works better for their children, for other swimmers and for the planet.
Products You Can Rely On
The Happy Nappy™
The Happy Nappy™ is where it all started for us, and it's still the product we're most proud of. Ninety percent of UK swim schools insist on it. Parents trust it. And it's won Platinum awards year after year from trusted bodies including Made for Mums and Loved by Parents.
It's designed to contain faecal matter securely in the pool, fitting neatly under swimwear without fuss or bulk. Reusable, reliable and recommended by swim schools everywhere. If you're not sure where to begin, this is a wonderful place to start.

The Happy Nappy Duo™
For parents who want the most thorough protection available, the Happy Nappy Duo™ was made with you in mind.
We spent four years developing and testing it before we launched it in 2021. It's the only swim nappy in the world with active silver technology: scientifically proven to kill germs that cause tummy bugs such as Cryptosporidium and E.coli, helping to keep your child and everyone else in the pool that little bit safer.
It's the world's first double layer swim nappy. The outer layer contains. The inner antimicrobial layer kills pathogens within the nappy and stays kind to sensitive skin. Because of its double layer design, UK swim schools recognise it as a complete double nappy system. No additional swim nappy needed underneath. It also happens to be made with recycled plastics, because we believe caring for your child and caring for the planet can go hand in hand.
Here's a quick summary:
Happy Nappy™ Wetsuits and Costumes
We've also woven Happy Nappy™ technology into a range of wetsuits and swimming costumes. The same containment you trust, built into a complete outfit your little one can feel good in.
It's one less thing to juggle at the poolside. And sometimes that makes all the difference.
For Older Children
Incontinence doesn't stop at toddlerhood, and neither does our range. Our kids' incontinence swimwear is designed with older children in mind too. The Splash Jammers offer the same reliable leak protection as a swim nappy, in a swim shorts style that looks just like what the other kids are wearing. Your child gets the confidence of proper containment without anything that singles them out.
That matters. And we know it matters to you too.
Getting Ready Together
A little preparation goes a long way, especially if your child feels nervous. Here's what tends to help:
Find out what your swim school needs. Most UK swim schools will specify a Happy Nappy™ product as standard. A quick check before the first lesson means you arrive with exactly the right kit.
Take time with the fit. A swim nappy that doesn't fit won't work as it should. Too loose and there's a risk of leaks. Too tight and it'll be uncomfortable for your child. We offer sizing guidance across our range to help you find the right fit first time.
Talk it through with your child. If they're anxious, a gentle walk through what to expect can really help: what the changing room looks like, who will be there, what happens when they get in the water. Knowing what's coming makes everything feel more manageable.
Get your bag ready the night before. A change of clothes, a bag for wet kit and anything else your child needs. One less thing to think about in the morning rush.
Stay close. Adult supervision is essential whenever children are in or around water. Whatever swimming aids your child uses, a responsible adult should always be present at poolside.
Things Parents Often Worry About
Will other children notice?
In most cases, no. Our wetsuits and swimming costumes with Happy Nappy™ technology look like regular swimwear. Your child can feel just like everyone else in the pool, because to everyone around them, they are.
Is it safe and hygienic for the other swimmers?
Absolutely, yes. Reusable swim nappies are designed specifically to contain faecal matter in the pool. The Happy Nappy Duo™ goes further still: its antimicrobial lining is scientifically proven to kill pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and E.coli within the nappy itself, before they can reach the water. It's one of the reasons swim schools advocate for it so strongly.
Will my child be allowed in the pool?
In the vast majority of cases, yes: provided they're wearing the right swimwear. Splash About products are trusted by swim schools precisely because they meet pool hygiene requirements. Your child's place in the water is there for them.
My child is older. Are there still options for them?
Yes, and good ones. Our kids' incontinence range includes the Splash Jammers, which look just like regular swim shorts and offer the same protection as a swim nappy. If you'd like to talk through what might work best for your child, we'd love to help. Just drop us a line at info@splashabout.com.
