How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Swim Class
Taking your little one to their first swimming lesson is one of those magical milestones that's equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking! If you're feeling a bit anxious about that first dip in the pool, you're absolutely not alone. Most parents worry about whether their baby will cry, if they've remembered everything they need, or whether the pool will be cold. The good news? With a bit of preparation, you'll walk through those changing room doors feeling calm, confident, and ready to make some wonderful memories in the water.
Getting Your Little One Pool-Ready
The days and weeks leading up to that first lesson are the perfect time to introduce your baby to the idea of water being fun, not scary. Here are some simple ways to build their confidence:
Make Bath Time a Splash Zone:
Turn your usual bath routine into mini swimming practice sessions. Gently pour water over their tummy and back, let them kick their legs, and make it playful. Use cups to pour water (avoiding their face until they're comfortable), sing songs, and generally create positive associations with being in water. The more relaxed and giggly bath time is, the more confident they'll feel when they meet the bigger pool.
Try on the Swim Kit in Advance:
There's nothing worse than discovering on the morning of the lesson that your baby's costume doesn't fit properly. A few days before the class, do a dress rehearsal at home. Pop on their swim nappy and wetsuit during a happy, calm moment, let them crawl or toddle around in it for a few minutes, and make a big fuss about how brilliant they look. This means there'll be one less new thing to process on the actual day.
Pack Your Bag the Night Before:
Trust us on this one. Trying to remember everything whilst wrestling a wriggly baby into a car seat on a cold morning is a recipe for forgotten items and frazzled nerves. Get your swim bag sorted the evening before, tick everything off your checklist, and leave it by the door. Future you will be incredibly grateful.
Now, let's talk about what actually needs to go in that swim bag. We've created a handy graphic checklist for you, but here are the details on why each item is a genuine game-changer:
1. Happy Nappy™ Duo
This is the star of the show, and quite honestly, it's the only swim nappy you'll need. The Happy Nappy Duo™ is a world exclusive. It's the first and only reusable swim nappy with an active silver lining scientifically proven to kill pathogens like Cryptosporidium and E. coli before they enter the water.
Here's the brilliant bit: because it has an inbuilt double-layer system with that silver-lined inner layer, it's accepted by UK swim schools as meeting their double nappy requirements. That means you don't need to faff about with disposables underneath or worry about buying multiple products. One nappy does it all.
Not only does this save you time on swimming lesson mornings (one less thing to wrestle onto a wriggling baby), but it also saves you money in the long run. Disposable swim nappies can cost a small fortune over the months and years of swimming lessons, and they can take up to 500 years to decompose in a landfill.
It fits snugly with clever seals around the waist and thighs to reliably protect against leaks (just remember, like all swim nappies, it won't hold wee, so keep a regular nappy on until you're poolside). With beautiful designs to choose from and sizes from newborn through toddler years, it's an investment that genuinely pays for itself.
2. Baby Wrap™
Even heated baby pools can feel chilly to tiny bodies, and there's nothing that ends a swimming lesson faster than a cold, unhappy baby. The Baby Wrap™ is an absolute lifesaver here.
Made from soft, 2mm neoprene, the Baby Wrap™ is designed to maintain your baby's core body temperature whilst leaving their arms and legs completely free to splash, kick, and explore the feeling of water around them. This is important for their development; they need to feel the water to build confidence and understand how to move through it.
The genius design opens completely flat, which makes getting it on and off incredibly easy. You simply lay your baby on top of the open wrap and fold it around them, securing it with strong Velcro-style fastenings. These adjustable fastenings mean the Baby Wrap™ will fit your little one for several months as they grow, making it an excellent value for money.
A bonus? The neoprene provides a non-slip surface, which gives you a much better grip when you're holding your slippery, wet baby in and out of the water. Many parents say this makes them feel much more confident and secure during lessons.
Pair the Baby Wrap™ with a matching Happy Nappy Duo™, and you've got a complete swim outfit that ticks all the boxes: warm, comfortable, safe, and adorable.
3. After Swimming Waterproof Onesie
Right, let's talk about one of the biggest challenges of baby swimming: the mad dash from the pool to the car whilst trying to keep your baby warm and happy. Enter the After Swimming Waterproof Onesie.
These clever onesies are lined with luxuriously soft, cuddly fleece on the inside, so you can pop them straight onto your damp baby after the lesson. No need for complicated layers or trying to get limbs through tiny jumper sleeves whilst your baby's doing their best impression of a wriggling salmon. The waterproof and windproof outer layer protects them from the elements during that walk to the car park (because it's almost always raining or windy in Britain, isn't it?).
The large fleece-lined hood, ribbed cuffs at wrists and ankles, and chunky front zip all work together to keep the warmth in and the cold out. Many babies absolutely love the cosy feeling and will drift off for their post-swim nap before you've even left the car park.
They're available in gorgeous prints and fit children from 6 months to 3 years. They're also incredibly practical because they can be easily wiped clean if there are any little spills, or popped in the washing machine when needed. Lightweight and slim enough to wear safely in the car seat, they're genuinely one of those products you'll wonder how you ever managed without.
4. Quick-Dry Towel
Trying to quickly get yourself dry before your little one screams the changing room down with a heavy, wet towel that takes up half your swimming bag is no one's idea of a good time. That's where a proper quick-dry towel changes everything.
Our Quick-Dry Towels are lightweight yet super absorbent; they'll dry you (and your baby) in no time at all, and then dry out incredibly quickly themselves, ready to be packed away. No more musty-smelling towels sitting damply in your bag for the rest of the day.
They're generously sized (big enough to wrap around both adults and children), come in bright, cheerful colours, and feature a handy attached elastic loop. Use it to hang the towel up to dry, then wrap it around the towel when folded to keep everything compact. They're also easy to shake sand off, making them perfect if you venture to the beach too.
5. Flattering Adult Swimwear
Let's be honest, it's easy to forget about yourself when you're focused on getting your baby ready for their swimming debut. But you'll be getting in the pool too, and feeling comfortable and confident in your own swimwear makes a massive difference to how much you'll enjoy the experience.
For Mums, our women's swimwear collection is designed with real bodies in mind. The swimming costumes feature thoughtful tummy control panels, modest coverage, and flattering cuts that suit women of all shapes and sizes. They're made from high-quality, chlorine-resistant materials that maintain their shape and colour, even with regular use.
Available in beautiful, sophisticated colours rather than overly bright patterns, these costumes are perfect for postpartum bodies, too. The gentle support and comfortable stretch fabric accommodate your changing shape while helping you feel confident and ready to focus on your baby's swimming journey. There are even matching mummy and baby bundles if you want to coordinate.
For Dads Gents, you're not forgotten! Our men's swim shorts are comfortable, practical, and stylish. With a tapered design to prevent drag, drawstring waists for the perfect fit, and deep pockets, they're everything you need for swimming trips. Available in classic colours, they're a great choice for swimming lessons, beach days, or just your regular swim.
The key here is that both mums and dads feel comfortable. Your baby will absolutely pick up on your emotions and confidence levels in the water, so wearing swimwear that makes you feel good is genuinely important for their first swimming experience.
6. Wet Bags
This might seem like a small thing, but wet bags are an absolute essential. After the lesson, you may have a soiled Happy Nappy™ and damp swimwear to deal with. The last thing you want is all that moisture and mess mixing with the dry clothes in your swimming bag.
Our Wet Bags are made from high-quality, water-resistant polyester and feature a secure zip closure that keeps everything sealed inside. They're spacious enough to hold multiple swimming nappies yet compact enough to fit easily in your bag. The convenient hanging loop means you can attach them to your pram, changing bag, or hook.
Available in packs of two in complementary colours (Cashmere Blue and Pistachio), they're lightweight, reusable, and a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bags. They're genuinely a product that makes you think, "Why didn't I get these sooner?"
7. Pool Toys
Now, not every swim school allows toys during structured lessons, but having a couple in your bag can be brilliant for calming nerves beforehand or for practice sessions outside of class.
Pool toys serve multiple purposes for babies and young children. They help encourage nervous babies into the water, keep little ones engaged during free swim time, and can be used as rewards to encourage swimming away from adults to retrieve the toy.
Our range includes brightly coloured, lightweight toys that are perfect for little hands. The Pufferfish toys and Snippets are designed with no squirt holes, which means they won't collect mould and bacteria. They can be cleaned and stored completely dry, which is much more hygienic.
The sensory toys are especially good for bath time practice sessions leading up to the lessons. Some are even safe for teething babies, made with food-grade paint, so you don't have to panic if they go in little mouths.
Remember, adult supervision is always required when children use toys in water, but used thoughtfully, they can really help build positive associations with pool time.
8. Positive Attitude
This might not go in your physical swim bag, but it's possibly the most important thing to bring with you. Babies and toddlers are incredibly perceptive; they pick up on your emotions, your body language, and your energy levels. If you're tense and worried, they'll sense it. If you're relaxed and cheerful, they're much more likely to be too.
Try to approach the first lesson with calm enthusiasm rather than anxiety. Even if your baby cries or seems unsure at first, that's completely normal and nothing to worry about. Swimming teachers are experienced with all sorts of reactions, and most babies need a few sessions to fully settle in.
Keep smiling, keep your voice upbeat and encouraging, and trust that you're doing something wonderful for your child. Learning to swim is a vital life skill, and by taking them to these lessons, you're setting them up for a lifetime of water confidence and fun.
If you're feeling nervous yourself, chat to other parents at the pool or talk to the instructor beforehand. Everyone's been where you are, and you'll quickly realise you're part of a lovely, supportive community of families all on the same journey.
You've Got This!
First swimming lessons are a big deal, but they're also genuinely special. With your bag packed the night before, your little one familiar with their swim kit, and a deep breath of confidence, you're going to do brilliantly.
Remember, even if things don't go perfectly to plan (when do they ever with babies?), you're still creating positive experiences with water that will benefit your child for years to come. So pack that bag, stick your checklist on the fridge, and get ready to make a splash. You've absolutely got this!
