The First Splash Matters: Why Early Years Swimming Can Save Lives
For many children, their first experience in water is pure joy. Splashing about, laughing and discovering something completely new.
But those early moments in the pool can also shape something much bigger. Confidence, independence and skills that could one day save their life.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children worldwide. In the United States it is the number one cause of death for children aged 1 to 4, while globally the World Health Organisation estimates that more than 236,000 people lose their lives to drowning each year.
Encouragingly, research shows that early swimming lessons can make a significant difference. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88% for children aged one to four.
It is a powerful reminder that the journey to becoming a confident swimmer often begins with the very first splash.
For Splash About, supporting that journey has been the focus for more than two decades.
Supporting the Learn to Swim Community
For over 20 years Splash About has been designing products to support babies and young children as they begin their swimming journey.
Our passion has always been about helping children feel confident and safe in the water from the very beginning. Swim schools play an incredibly important role in giving children those early positive experiences in water. Everything we design is focused on supporting that learning journey, making lessons easier to deliver, safer for swimmers and more enjoyable for families.

Protecting Water Quality in Baby Swim Lessons
One of the biggest challenges faced by swim schools teaching babies and toddlers is protecting water quality during lessons.
To address this, Splash About developed the Happy Nappy, the original reusable swim diaper created specifically for swim classes. Today it is trusted by swim schools around the world and worn by more than 90% of babies attending swim lessons in the UK, with growing adoption across the United States.
The company later introduced the Happy Nappy DUO, a double diaper system designed to provide an extra layer of protection while removing the need for disposable swim diapers.
For swim schools this means fewer lesson interruptions, cleaner water and greater confidence for instructors and parents.
Supporting the Full Learn to Swim Journey
While the Happy Nappy is widely recognised, Splash About has always focused on the wider learning journey.
Today the company offers a complete range of products designed to support children from their first splash through the early stages of learning to swim. This includes baby wetsuits, swimwear, buoyancy products and learn to swim aids used in professional swim schools, leisure
centres, holiday parks and family pools around the world.
Rethinking Pool Toys for Skill Development
Over the past year Splash About has taken a fresh look at how pool toys can support the learning journey.
Rather than simply creating toys for entertainment, the focus has been on developing sensory swim toys and sinkers that actively support skill development and engagement during lessons.
These products are mould resistant, durable and brightly designed to capture children's attention while helping instructors guide activities that build confidence and coordination.

Supporting Swim Schools Beyond the Lesson
Products used during lessons quickly become favourites with young swimmers and trusted by parents.
For swim schools and pool operators this creates an opportunity to introduce poolside retail, offering the same products used in class to families who want to continue the experience outside of lessons.
Many swim schools now use Splash About products as part of a simple retail programme, creating an additional revenue stream while reinforcing learning through familiar products.
More Than Swimming: Supporting Early Childhood Development
The benefits of baby swimming extend far beyond water safety.
Early water experiences help develop
coordination, balance and motor skills while also building confidence and
independence in young children. For many families, swimming lessons also become
an important bonding experience between parent and child.
Helping Build a Safer Future in the Water
As awareness of water safety grows, the importance of early years swimming continues to become clearer.
For Splash About the mission remains the same after more than 20 years. Supporting the global learn to swim community with products designed specifically for young swimmers.
Because when children feel confident in the water from their very first splash, they are taking the first step towards a lifetime of safe swimming.
