National Baby Swimming Week
Working Together to Promote Baby Swimming
We are thrilled to once again be working with Water Babies to highlight National Baby Swimming Week for the 8th year since its launch in 2016.
The aim is to make parents and carers aware of the huge benefits baby swimming can have on babies, both immediately and as they grow into childhood and beyond.
By choosing to take your baby to a swim class from an early age, you are giving them to best possible chance to become confident and safe in the water as well as opening them up to incredible health and wellness benefits.
Splash About
Splash About shares the same ethos as Water Babies, promoting safe and practical ways to ensure babies and young children can learn to swim with as little fuss as possible. That’s why we focus much of our attention on creating innovative products that will help parents and carers keep their babies happy in the water.
Our Happy Nappy™ products were designed to support baby swimming classes by significantly reducing faecal leaks, which can cause pool closures and delays or cancellations to lessons. The Happy Nappy™ product range is practical and reliable, yet comfortable and cute at the same time. This makes our Happy Nappy™ a favourite amongst parents, carers, and swim teachers alike.
Splash About was the first to introduce the Baby Wrap wetsuit at a time when baby swim lessons were just becoming popular, and there was nothing on the market to ensure babies were kept warm and comfortable. Splash About has kept the original Baby Wrap within our baby wetsuit range, its popularity still intact, thanks to the innovative open-flat design and thick neoprene that wraps around the baby’s core to keep them warm, even in cooler waters
Over the years, our wetsuit range has expanded, and we love hearing stories from parents and teachers about how our baby swimming products have helped babies stay in the pool for longer. Our Warm in One has kept babies so warm, in fact, that some have even fallen asleep in the water.
Baby Swimming Benefits
First and foremost, baby swimming is essential as the first step in teaching children water safety, respect for the water, and of course, how to swim.
Routine
Attending a weekly baby swim class helps establish a routine and can strengthen the bond between parents and babies. Regular attendance encourages water confidence from an early age. It is important to mention that babies do not need to have had all their injections before going swimming. The Department of Health state that “You can take your baby swimming at any time before and after their immunisations.”
Water Safety
A baby swim class, such as Water Babies, will teach your little one important water safety skills, like how to hold onto the side of the pool and how to blow water out of their mouth rather than inhaling it if their head goes underwater. This equips them with the very first, basic survival skills and helps them to respect the water in later life.
Health Benefits
Babies who swim are generally stronger, both physically and mentally, than their non-swimming peers. The movements required for swimming strengthen leg and arm muscles, as well as internal organs like the heart and lungs. Additionally, a study by Griffith University in Australia showed that children who learnt to swim before the age of 5 were more advanced in their cognitive and physical development compared to those who didn’t.
Baby swimming is a form of exercise, both for you and your baby. Exercise promotes better sleep and a healthy appetite, so you'll likely find that your baby just wants a snack and a nap after their lesson. Good for baby, good for you!
Socialisation
Finally, baby swimming lessons can help babies develop social skills. Interacting with their parents, other babies, and their teachers sets them up for a future of making friends. It also benefits parents and carers who may feel isolated with a new baby. At a baby swim class, you’re all in the same boat (so to speak), and it’s a great opportunity to connect with others who have babies of a similar age to your own.
National Baby Swimming week runs from Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th September and you can find out more details and how to book your baby swimming classes with Water Babies here
