Learn To Swim FAQ
Why swimming is an important life skill?
A child who is comfortable in water is safer if they ever have a water accident, a child who loves playing in water regularly will be fitter, healthier and better co-ordinated than one who just sits in front of the television or computer! If you watch children in a pool or the sea they are likely to be smiling and laughing, jumping and moving around, having fun, exercising their muscles, lungs and heart and using both sides of their brain - a great plus for the years ahead!
When is it to old to learn?
Never! and we have buoyancy to suit most ages and shapes and sizes. Our wide range of Floatsuits are available in sizes to fit children from 1 year to 6 years and our float jackets from 1 year old up to XL adults.
Where can I find my local swim school?
We have information on swim schools around the world ….here... you can search on the Internet, in local news papers and your telephone directory for swimming pools near you, then just call or visit for information to see if it suits you.
What equipment do I need?
If your child is going to swim classes whilst they are still in nappies - or there is any possibility at all of them needing a nappy - you must use a swim nappy that limits leaks as much as possible such as the Splash About Happy Nappy. You should check that the swim school or pool ensures those in the pool with you use effective swim nappies too. Although pools are treated to deal with urine, feces in the pool is a very serious health risk.
Most baby swim schools insist upon our Happy Nappy or Happy Nappy system for this reason. The sizes range from birth up to toddler and older for those with special needs. A Combi wetsuit or UV combi wetsuit is ideal to keep children warm and also deals with pool to changing room chills. A big absorbent towel and cosy clothing to wear home - the Apres Splash Hooded top and trousers are an ideal solution ad also block the spread of fungal and bacterial infections, they offer SPF50+ maxium sun protection too. A drink (warm, chemicalised pools cause dehydration) and a snack for afterwards. If your child has eczema a barrier cream will be needed.
The correct Buoyancy products work wonders - float jackets or floatsuits are a perfect tool to teach children to swim. The Adjustable Buoyancy System in our floatsuits and float jackets has 16 removable floats so they can be adjusted to suit the buoyancy level of your child - we are all different and you can not see how buoyant someone is by looking at them! The floats can then be removed, piece by piece, over time resulting in learning to swim in a stress free way for everyone. Floatsuits and float jackets are and excellent security option around the pool or on the beach
